I have just had an excellent 2 days in Paris! – With a group of about 12 fellow artists we visited the art exhibitions of Félix Vallotton, Serge Poliakoff, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivero and the haute-couture of Ataïa. I finished with an amazing tour around the Musée Guimet (Musée national des Arts asiatiques) “Angkor”.
This last exhibition was about Louis Delaporte (January 11, 1842 —May 3, 1925) a French explorer and incredible illustrator artist, whose collection and documentation of Khmer art formed the nucleus of exhibitions in Paris, originally at the 1878 Paris Exposition and later at the Palais du Trocadéro, where he became chief curator of the Musée Indochinois. In 1927, after his death, his collection was moved to the Guimet Museum.
His paintings and drawings were a joy to see and his plaster moldings of Khmer towers and reliefs so detailed. …. I can’t wait to see the real monuments in their proper surroundings!
